विश्व पर्यटन दिवस (World Tourism Day) समारोह संयुक्त राष्ट्र विश्व पर्यटन संगठन द्वारा 1980 में शुरु किया गया जो प्रत्येक वर्ष 27 सितम्बर को मनाया जाता है। यह विशेष दिन इसलिये चुना गया क्योंकि इस दिन 1970 में यू.एन.डब्ल्यू.टी.ओ. के कानून प्रभाव में आये थे जिसे विश्व पर्यटन के क्षेत्र में बहुत बडा मील का पत्थर माना जाता है, इसका लक्ष्य विश्व पर्यटन की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका के बारे में अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय समुदायों के साथ साथ सामाजिक, आर्थिक, सांस्कृतिक, राजनीतिक मूल्यों को वैश्विक स्तर पर कैसे प्रभावित करता है के बारे में लोगों को जागरुक करना है।

ये दिन हर साल एक विशेष विषय के साथ लोगों को जागरुक करने के लिये पूरे विश्व में मनाया जाता है। 2013 में इस कार्यक्रम का विषय पर्यटन और पानी: हमारे साझे भविष्य की रक्षा था और 2014 में पर्यटन और सामुदायिक विकास। शायद 2015 में इस कार्यक्रम का विषय लाखों पर्यटक, लाखों अवसर होगा। ये दिन हर साल 27 सितम्बर को लोगों को पर्यटन के महत्व के बारे में जागरुक करने के लिये मनाया जाता है।

हर वर्ष आम जनता के लिए एक संदेश यू.एन.डब्ल्यू.टी.ओ. के महासचिव द्वारा इस अवसर में भाग लेने के लिए भेजा जाता है। ये विभिन्न पर्यटन उद्यमों, संगठनों, सरकारी एजेंसियों और आदि के द्वारा बहुत रुचि के साथ मनाया जाता है। इस दिन विभिन्न प्रकार की प्रतियोगिताएँ जैसे पर्यटन को बढ़ावा देने के लिये फोटो प्रतियोगिता, मुफ्त प्रवेश के साथ पर्यटन पुरस्कार प्रस्तुतियाँ, आम जनता के लिये छूट/ विशेष प्रस्ताव आदि आयोजित किये जाते हैं।

पर्यटकों के लिए विभिन्न आकर्षक और नए स्थलों की वजह से पर्यटन दुनियाभर में लगातार बढ़ने वाला और विकासशील आर्थिक क्षेत्र बन गया है। तो यह विकासशील देशों के लिए आय का मुख्य स्रोत बन गया है।
